Center for Human Services has served the community for over 40 years by providing a variety of counseling services since 1970. The not-for-profit social services agency was created in 1982 from a merger between the Creative Life Foundation and Shoreline Youth Services.


CHS Timeline

1970 Creative Life Foundation is established in May with 3½ staff and 12 volunteers. At the time, CLF was the primary source in the Northwest for drug abuse information.
1972 CHS contracts with the State of Washington for counseling services and has contracted continually ever since.
1973 Shoreline Youth Services is created in August to provide counseling and delinquency prevention services to youth and families.CHS becomes certified by the Department of Social and Health Services as a chemical dependency program.Since 1973 CHS has functioned as a youth services bureau, and now is a member of the Youth and Family Services Network, providing, under contract with King County, a wide range of services to youth and families.
1982 Center for Human Services (CHS), as it is known today, was formed in as a result of a merger between the Creative Life Foundation and Shoreline Youth Services.
1994 CHS opens the Shoreline Family Support Center, providing community-based classes and activities designed to increase the ability of families to nurture their children.
1996 CHS becomes licensed as a mental health provider.
1988-1999 CHS operated the University District Youth Center, a drop-in center for homeless youth.

In 1996 began an employment program called the Working Zone for homeless youth in the University District.

1978-2001 CHS was one of four agencies statewide to receive certification as an approved Educational Clinic from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

CHS operated alternative education centers in Shoreline and Lynnwood.

2004 CHS opens the Northshore Family Support Center in Bothell.CHS also opens the Ballinger Homes Family Support Center, which now operates under the Shoreline Family Support Center as the Ballinger Homes site.
2007 CHS purchases a building in Bothell, at 18414 103rd Ave NE, to serve the Northshore community.CHS is excited and honored to be selected as one of 8 sites nationally to participate in the Supporting Healthy Marriage project, the first large-scale, multi-site, multi-year, rigorous test of marriage education programs for low-income married couples.

The Loving Families program was designed to help low-income couples strengthen their marriages so they will be strong parents and raise successful children.

2011 CHS purchases an additional building in Shoreline, at 148th and 15th Ave NE, in order to increase our capacity to meet the ever growing needs of the community.
