A Letter from the CHS Board President and CHS Executive Director

Dear Community Members:

On behalf of the Board and the Staff of CHS we are proud to present to you our 2006 annual report.  2006 was an extraordinary year, as you will learn in what follows.

In the arena of service delivery, we continued to deliver our core services in the Northend at or above the levels we provided in previous years. We expanded our work with the Northshore School District by placing a therapist in two of their behavioral disorders programs. In February 2006, with the King County’s closure of the ADATSA assessment center, we began offering substance abuse assessments & case management for people who quality for ADATSA (a state program for individuals who are chronically chemically dependent & unemployed).  In 2006, our programs again served over 10,000 clients in total.

In the arena of fund raising, we broke from tradition by holding our first evening Community Connections dinner and auction.  With great auctioneering once again from Bob Drewel (former Snohomish County Executive and Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council) and Bob Watt (Vice President for Government Affairs at the Boeing Company), the event raised over the $75,000.  This year’s event will be held the evening of March 9th, once again at the Nile Country Club in Mountlake Terrace.

Organizational development and capacity planning was a big focus in 2006. Early in the year, CHS received a grant of money and technical assistance from Social Ventures Partners, a highly regarded local non-profit that specializes in helping organizations like CHS grow and develop.  Rachel Klausner, an SVP partner who specializes in strategic planning, is assisting CHS to develop its next strategic plan and to identify other SVP resources to help strengthen CHS’s basic service delivery infrastructure.  We continued to work diligently on our cultural competency plan and received an “honorable mention” in the Northwest Jobs 2006 People’s Picks as a “company that most values diversity.”  Finally, we instituted a Simplified Employee Pension Plan for employees who have worked for CHS for three years or longer.

As fortune may have it, the strategic planning and capacity building work we embarked upon with SVP was timely.  Early last summer, the Kirlin Foundation approached CHS about applying to become a research site for a federal project working with low income couples on relationship building. With Board support, CHS’s application was made and accepted.  We will begin a pilot program in the summer of 2007, using the “Loving Couples Loving Children” curriculum developed by the Gottman Institute. The excitement among the staff and Board about this project is tremendous, and the work of the staff to prepare CHS for this new opportunity has been exceptional.

As you can tell, 2006 was an extraordinary year for CHS, one that will likely change the course of the organization for years to come.  Of course, we want to thank all of you who have supported CHS through the donation of money and time, and by spreading the word about the value we bring to the community.  CHS couldn’t be successful without your continued support.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2007!

Nick Pealy,
CHS Board President

Beratta Gomillion,
CHS Executive Director
